Plus, updates on Arti 1.5.0's latest features and critical bug fixes.

Corruption and Control: How Turkmenistan turned internet censorship into a business

In July 2021, a sudden drop in Tor usage in Turkmenistan called our attention. Tor would come to understand that this marked the beginning of a new era of censorship and restriction in this post-Soviet country.

Find out more about how one of the world's most isolated regimes has pushed internet censorship beyond surveillance and control. In an Orwellian twist, the people blocking access to the internet are the same ones secretly selling it back, at a price most Turkmens can't afford: https://blog.torproject.org/Corruption-Control-Turkmenistan-internet-censorship-business/

Our commitment to donor privacy at Tor

Tor is committed to securely managing donor data and communications. In this post, we share a little bit about the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, CiviCRM, that we use to store donation records and donor information. We hope this offers you confidence in how your personal data is handled and secured whenever you make a donation: https://blog.torproject.org/our-commitment-to-donor-privacy-at-tor/

Keeping up with the latest releases

Tor VPN Beta: now testing

Last month, we've opened early access testing for Tor VPN–a new VPN app for Android developed by the Tor Project. Tor VPN Beta routes your app traffic through Tor, giving each app its own Tor circuit and exit IP, preventing network observers from connecting all of your online activity.

Important limitations:

  • Early beta: not for high-risk users or sensitive use cases
  • Limited anti-censorship features: connection issues likely in heavily censored regions
  • Expect bugs: and help report them: support.torproject.org/misc/bug-or-feedback/

This release is for testers who can safely participate and want to help shape mobile privacy. Join the beta: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.torproject.vpn&hl=en_US

Tails 7.0

We are very excited to present you Tails 7.0, the first version of Tails based on Debian 13 (Trixie) and GNOME 48 (Bengaluru). Tails 7.0 brings new versions of many applications included in Tails.

Arti 1.5.0

Arti 1.5.0 continues development on important client features, including Counter Galois Onion encryption, Conflux, flow control and congestion control, and onion service proof of work. It also includes significant backend work for Arti relay support. Additionally, this release mitigates a longstanding bug that could prevent Arti clients from bootstrapping: https://blog.torproject.org/arti_1_5_0_released/
